Dr. Hyun Kook, MD, PhD, holds his degrees from Chonnam National University Medical School in Gwangju, South Korea, where he is currently a professor and runs government-supported research grants such as National Research Laboratory and Basic Research Laboratory to find new therapeutics for heart diseases.
Though Dr. Kook has no formal music education, he has been writing music since 2005 and has garnered a strong following in the choral composition world in Korea. His works have been performed at numerous choral festivals and conferences in Korea, Europe, and the United States, and is a regular recipient of commissions from many professional choirs. He has received several composition awards including the Zane Busch Award for outstanding creativity in choral music at the Composers’ Symposium in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2011. His musical works – a catalogue of well over 260 pieces – are carried by Shawnee Press, Santa Barbara Music Press, Lorenz, Walton, SoundForth, Roger Dean, Colla Voce, Heritage, St. James Music Press, earthsongs, and Pavane Publishing. Recently, his Cantate Domino, was included in the finalists at the 1st international choral composition competition in Japan and was performed as part of the regular service at the St. Marco Cathedral in Venice, Italy in 2016.
